Hibernia Management and Development Company (HMDC) has reported an incident that occurred on the Hibernia Platform on July 18, 2026.

At approximately 5:05 am, a pipe deck crew was preparing 9 ^5/8-inch casing joints – each weighing approximately 2100 lbs – for transfer to the rig in support of drilling operations. During lifting operations with a gantry crane, two casing joints separated from the crane’s magnets while suspended approximately two metres (6.6 feet) above the pipe deck and fell to the deck below.

One of the casing joints contacted the lower left leg of a worker who was positioned in the area at the time of the incident. The worker was transported onshore for further medical evaluation.

Following the incident operations in the area were suspended. The west gantry crane was removed from service and the crane manufacturer engaged to inspect the equipment. Following inspection, no equipment deficiencies were identified, and the crane was approved for return to service.

A safety stand-down was conducted to review the event and reinforce safety expectations.

Due to the weight of the object and the distance travelled, the incident had the potential for fatality based on the Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme calculator. There was also a potential fatality incident on the Hibernia Platform on May 12, 2026.

HMDC has initiated an investigation into the root cause of the incident, which the C-NLOER is monitoring. The C-NLOER is continuing its follow-up to the May 12 incident.
